The Five Pillars of Ayurveda
1.Panchamahabhutas (Five Elements)
Everything in the universe, including the human body, is composed of five fundamental elements: Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu), and Space (Akasha).
These elements are believed to be the foundational building blocks that influence all physiological and psychological processes.
2. Tridosha (Three Doshas)
The three biological energies—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—are derived from combinations of the five elements.
Each individual has a unique constitution (Prakriti) governed by the predominance of these doshas, and health is achieved by maintaining their balance.
3. Sapta Dhatus (Seven Tissues)
These are the seven bodily tissues that sustain the body: Rasa (plasma), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), Meda (fat), Asthi (bone), Majja (bone marrow and nerves), and Shukra (reproductive tissue).
The equilibrium and nourishment of these tissues are essential for vitality.
4. Agni (Digestive Fire)
Agni refers to digestive fire or metabolism, responsible for the transformation of food into energy and tissues.
Balanced agni ensures proper digestion, absorption, and assimilation, whereas impaired agni leads to disease.
5. Malas (Waste Products)
These are the natural waste products of the body: Purisha (feces), Mutra (urine), and Sweda (sweat).
Proper formation and elimination of malas are indicators of health; imbalances signify disease.
By understanding and maintaining the harmony of these five pillars, Ayurveda offers a comprehensive approach toward physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
